Esri India and CKS Launch 'MMGEIS' to Train 5 lakh Students in Geospatial Tech
Esri India and the Centre for Knowledge Sovereignty (CKS) have unveiled the pilot phase of the Master Mentors Geo-enabling Indian Scholars (MMGEIS) program. The initiative aims to provide geospatial technology training to 5 lakh  students in India over the next five years. The online program targets students from 8th grade to undergraduate level, fostering geospatial thinking and a research-oriented mindset.
The pilot phase will initially engage 1,000 students across the country, with plans for broader implementation starting June 2024. The program seeks to equip students with geospatial awareness and skills, preparing them to contribute to the workforce and positioning India as a global geospatial innovation hub.
A S Kiran Kumar, Member, Space Commission, and Former Chairman of ISRO, emphasized the importance of enabling young minds with geospatial knowledge, foreseeing MMGEIS as a medium to bring guidance and skills to encourage innovation in geospatial technology.
India, in 2022, witnessed over 66,400 patent applications, including 140 related to geospatial technology. The MMGEIS program also aims to contribute to a robust intellectual property (IP) framework, fostering more patents from India in the geospatial domain.
Agendra Kumar, Managing Director, Esri India, expressed the commitment to nurturing the next generation of geospatial innovators, believing that by providing students with geospatial awareness and skills, they will be well-prepared for future challenges.
Vinit Goenka, Secretary, CKS, highlighted that the mentorship provided by the program will transform students' approaches to education, focusing more on understanding and discovering new areas. The initiative aspires to position India as a world leader in innovation.
